Apple cider vinegar infused with Blue Vervain, Tulsi, and Valerian

Nervines are herbs that nourish and soothe the nervous system. Adaptogens help our bodies adapt to stress. When combined, these plants offer calming effects on our bodies and moods.

Blue vervain is a nervine with a long history. Verbena hastata is native to North America as well as the Mediterranean region. Other varieties of vervain appear throughout Europe. Many cultures have considered vervain sacred, including the Ancient Egyptians and the Druids, while the names used by the Dakota, the Omaha, and the Ponca for the North American variety translate to “medicine” and “herb medicine.” There has been more clinical research on Verbena oficinalis than Verbena hastata, but all indications suggest that blue vervain also demonstrates significant calming, anti-spasmodic, and healing effects on the nerves and nervous system.

Tulsi, also called Holy Basil or Holy Tulsi, is an adaptogen native to the Indian subcontinent and has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicinal systems. Tulsi has so many uses that it is often referred to as “the Elixir of Life” in Ayurvedic texts. Numerous studies have affirmed its adaptogenic effects on stress and mood.

Valerian has been used as a relaxant and sedative since Ancient Greece. In the 16th century is was used to treat “nervousness.” During World War II, the English used it to alleviate the stress caused by air raids. While clinical data has revealed mixed results in the use of valerian as a sleep aid, its historic use suggests that it may have a broader calming effect that is useful throughout the day.

This tincture combines Blue Vervain, Tulsi, and Valerian in an Apple Cider Vinegar infusion. Start by taking 1/2 dropper daily and increase to a full dropper if needed. If you find that even a mild sedative has an intense effect on your system, or if you are taking a medication that has a sleepiness side effect, you may want to start with 1/4 to 1/3 of a dropper so that you can monitor how well this tincture agrees with your body and its needs.
